Meta pixel not tracking purchases on Shopify? Here's why
Updated 8 November 2026 · by Matt Klette
You're spending on Meta ads, Shopify shows orders, but Events Manager shows few or no Purchase events. The most common cause on Shopify today isn't a broken pixel. It's a pixel installed in the wrong place.
Why it happens
Shopify's checkout and thank-you pages no longer run your theme's code. Shopify retired checkout.liquid and the old "Additional scripts" box when it moved stores to the new checkout. Anything installed in theme.liquid, a theme app embed, or a Google Tag Manager container loaded by your theme now stops at the cart.
The pixel still fires PageView and ViewContent on your storefront, so it looks alive. It just never sees the sale.
Only two things run on Shopify checkout:
- App pixels, such as the official Facebook & Instagram app.
- Custom pixels, which you add under Settings → Customer events.
How to check in five minutes
- In Meta Events Manager, open your pixel and look at the Purchase event over the last 7 days. Compare the count with your Shopify orders for the same days. A big gap (or zero) confirms it.
- In Shopify, go to Settings → Customer events. If you don't see the Facebook & Instagram app listed, and there's no custom pixel sending Purchase, nothing on checkout is talking to Meta.
- Or run a free Pixel Check scan. It reports exactly where your Meta pixel is installed (theme, Tag Manager or Shopify app) and flags it if no app or custom pixel covers checkout.
The fix
- Install or reconnect the Facebook & Instagram app and connect the same pixel (dataset). In the app's data sharing settings choose Maximum, which also sends purchases server-side through the Conversions API.
- Remove the old pixel from your theme or Tag Manager, or at least stop it sending the events the app now sends. Otherwise PageView and AddToCart are counted twice, which inflates results and confuses optimisation.
- Place a test order (or use a 100% discount code), then check Events Manager → Test events for a Purchase with the right value and currency.
checkout_completed event and sends Purchase with an event ID that matches your server events. It works, but the app is simpler and Meta supports it directly.Keep it fixed
This breaks again more often than you'd think: a theme switch brings the old pixel back, someone disconnects the app while tidying up, or an agency publishes a Tag Manager change. Pixel Check's daily monitoring emails you the day your Meta setup changes.
